Maori Tattoo Designs

Maori tattoo designs are among the most distinctive tattoos in the world and it is a sacred art among the Maori people of New Zealand.
Maori tattoo designs are beautiful, they have curved shapes and spirals in intricate patterns, and the most prevalent place for a Maori tattoo was the face.
Maori tattooing is very different traditional tattooing. The Maori tattoo was carved into the skin with albatross bone chisels and knives, instead of being punctured like in traditional tattooing. The ink was applied by making incisions in the skin.
Traditional Maori tattoos are known in the Maori language as ta moko which means to strike or tap, as in the process of tattooing in the Maori traditions.
By the end of the 19th century, other tattoo equipment like tattoo needles began to set in.
The Maori traditions such a tattooing lost much of its significance after the coming of European settlers.
In todays society Maori tattoo designs are back in style and are growing in popularity.
Modern Maori tattoos are usually found on the body rather than the face, and more often than not, modern tattoo equipment and ink are used – but the beautiful traditional ta moko designs still have a lot of appeal.

When we refer to small tattoos for women, this generally means that women get smaller tattoos than men. Women are usually physically smaller than men and that is why we consider more delicate things feminine. That’s why tattoos for women are generally smaller than male tattoos.
Most women who get tattoos usually only get one or 2 and place them on isolated parts of the body. Some women however do get tattoos that cover large areas of their bodies, like a full sleeve tattoo, but this is rare.
Usually women’s tattoo designs are also less bulky and less aggressive when compared to men’s tattoos. They usually have thinner lines, brighter colors and are overall more petite. This is of course a generalization, but overall this is what is seen in mainstream tattoo designs on women.
